The C-model range is so short that they can't realistically defend a carrier against anti-ship missiles.

US admits F-35 failed to replace F-16 as planned, needs new fighter jet
It would be funny if I wasn't paying for it. Just in the last decade we've bought the F-22 and the F-35, and that's not enough. Now they need another fighter jet. Never mind that the US has not had a jet to jet dogfight for 30 years and they haven't had a competitive dogfight in 50 years.

https://www.trtworld.com/magazine/us-ad ... -jet-44483
The announcement, made by Air Force Chief of Staff General Charles Brown came as a surprise to defence analysts, given that the F-35 was pegged as the modern fifth generation aircraft that would replace the F-16.

Instead, Air Force Chief Brown suggested they would develop a “fifth-generation-minus” fighter jet.

Nearly twenty years ago, the USAF set out to develop a replacement to the F-16’s successor, but the program only continued to grow prohibitively expensive as more cutting edge technology was poured into it. When it grew too expensive, other nations were brought in as partners to offset the runaway costs.
What do you expect when General Charlie Brown is in charge.

it's truly unfortunate the F-35 is such a flawed aircraft, i was reading that China is swarming Japan with small aircraft and the F-35 is unprepared to intercept them all so Japan is forced to cede their airspace to China

smitty talk about the F-35 more, i've been working the line doing electrical wiring on the fuselage for the past year

The fighter jet also suffers from a slightly embarrassing touchscreen problem. After making the switch from hard flipped switches to touch screens, pilots report that unlike a physical switch that you’re confident has been activated, touch screens in the plane don’t work 20 percent of the time says one F-35 pilot.
Very much an example of putting too much technology into something for no good reason. It's like having refrigerators with 15" touch-screens running Windows10... Maybe I don't need to be able to watch movies on my refrigerator door? Maybe I just want something that can be fixed for under $100, rather than something with "whiz bang" features I'll never use that cost $1000 to fix if it breaks? Maybe I don't need my refrigerator to have Wi-Fi? Maybe it's just "one more thing to break" and be a problem? :hand:
"People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome."

the Air Force says they want a "new" jet to replace F-16

meanwhile they could just buy new F-16's

really this is just about replacing the F-35 program with another F-35 program, the F-45 program

it's all the same thing

the F-16 has no built in obsolescence, it doesn't need to be replaced, this is how we got to F-35 in the first place

manned fighters have simply reached the limits of development, yet the MICC still needs a reason to buy new

larding up the programs with technology for its own sake is what the MICC does, that's a feature not a bug

the media has F-35 Derangement Syndrome, but really every program at the Pentagon is like F-35

Army FCS, CVN 78, DDG-1000, Marine EFV, B-2, F-22, etc etc, it's all F-35 for as far as the eye can see

this the state of American weapons development writ large, F-35 is not the exception it's the rule

every weapon you have which is good, was designed in the 60's, fielded in the late 70's / early 80's

since about the late 1980's, everything has gone off the rails

F-35 Derangement Syndrome is stupid, because it asserts that the F-35 is different from any other program

the F-35 is what the Air Force calls a "Kludge"

a hangar queen which you have to baby

but what isn't a Kludge these days ? Everything the Pentagon buys is a Kludge now, so it's a wash

all the competitors are Kludges too, Typhoon is a Kludge, Rafale is a Kludge, the competing MIC's are the same

the Russians & Chinese are building Kludges too, SU-57 is the same, J-31 is the same

none of the military powers are building to fight and win conventional wars

the only war being fought here is for market share

fighting and winning conventionally is modern, but this is postmodern war, everything is a meme

Yeah, what a game.

It's like when they wanted a prop driven, long loiter time CAS Aircraft.

I dont have a lot of confidence that the plane we bought are substantial better than a Sky Raider or OV 10 Bronco.

It is crazy how military systems have stalled out. Whether its platoon level weapons, the BMG .50, or the B52. Drones are a 21st C step forward, but most it is just updated versions of the same.
