My wife has a little bit of that in her too, she wants to participate in democracy, but at times she struggles to understand what it means to be free. It is hard for people who grew up during a prosperous time in China, and have never known anything else. Generally, these people never really stepped out of line, so they do not truly understand how little freedom they actually have.

I don't know if my realizing how little freedom I actually have makes much of a difference

in terms of stepping out of line, the masses tend to want step towards even more crazy authoritarian paradigms

if you incited people to step out of line, they'd demand more communism not less

it's like right now I am ruled by communists, but if I overthrew them, I would end up ruled by Communists
