that was the pejorative imposed by Ngo Dinh Diem

the actual name was the National Liberation Front

they weren't actually Communists, it was the remnants of the nationalist Viet Minh in South Vietnam

the core of their ideology was Buddhism

it was a Buddhist peasantry ruled over by French Catholic Mandarins in the cities

The North Vietnamese were the Communists, but that was a separate country and government

which simply intervened against the South Vietnamese government in the name of national reunification

there were in fact to opposing factions of Communists

one backed by the Soviets led by Ho Chi Minh who was from North Vietnam

the other backed by the Chinese led by Le Duan who had fled north from South Vietnam

these two factions subsequently went to war with each other over Cambodia

when China backed the Khmer Rouge and Vietnam declared war against their former Chinese Communist patrons

culminating with a Communist Chinese invasion of Communist Vietnam in 1979
