"But instead of judging men and women's raw scores against the same rubric, the Army is proposing separate percentile bands for men and women that would be gender-blind when soldiers go before a promotion board."
Wait, how is "separate percentile bands for men and women" possibly "gender-blind"?
Don't they do this already in IQ tests: women's scores are automatically "corrected" to fit in line with men's?
Equity not equality, ad infinitum.
I've never heard this?
Not sure. Might be facebook meme-tier facts.
I'm pretty sure men have more variability than women at a minimum, such that they are strongly overrepresented in the top and bottom. I've heard a minor 3-5pt difference in average, but that seems debatable (and fairly minor anyway). Certainly differences in how they perform on different sections.
Yeah, I'm aware of the higher variability. That is why there tends to be more male top scientists than female. On the flip side, that also means there are more stupid guys than girls also.

I haven't either, however, ignoring min required standards ignored has been common. I spent my military time in jobs requiring what is called heavy physical standards. Meaning you had to be capable of lifting 50 lbs, etc.
There are also standards for mental capacity, including spatial reasoning, mechanical aptitude and mathematics. And these too were ignored to let women have the job.
