My SUV died 5 years ago or so, I decided to just go for a cheap sedan to replace it for now, but I rented a car a few weekends to go car shopping (since they're closed Sunday so I got it for 2 days at reduced price) - one time they didn't have a compact so they gave me a minivan at the same price, with the seats removed even - it fit full sheets of plywood just fine, so I bought several sheets of 3/8 1/2, and 3/4 ply (plus 2x4s & 4x4s) to stash in my shed, figuring I wouldn't have a truck in the future...

While I haven't used the plywood yet, the other lumber has come in handy so far.

I also grabbed an 8' piece of 1/2" & 3/4" copper pipe, plus 10pks of T & elbow joints for each size, for future plumbing repairs. Given how the price of copper pipe has gone up that was a good idea.

If you think you're complaining today about the price, imagine how much you'll be complaining 5 years from now.

reminds me I have a punch of copper scrap wire that needs selling. Guess it isn't all bad...

Also brings up another point. Manufacturers have stopped making the car I bought. Cheap models are being discontinued all over the place. Doesn't count as "inflation" of course, but it's just another way it's getting harder to live cheaply. I'm very much a A-to-B utility minded car buyer, and it irks me that the best car I've ever owned is now "too cheap" to keep making. I was planning on selling it in a couple years and just buying a new one, but that's out the window too.

If you are interested in the best value in your car, you should buy one that is about 2 years old. Cars lose value the fastest in its first two years of life. So around that 2 year point is when a car hits that sweet spot of price to lifespan still remaining.

Meh. If you’re going to include the difference in fuel costs, you have to include the total fuel cost too. $2k is not much compared to the total price of car + fuel for 100k miles.
