That's the one on foxes; I'm looking for the one where Russian experimenters supposedly interbreed all dogs back to a wolf. It's been in the past decade since I read it.

If one looks at my libsyn podcast feed how manic do the topics seem? How would you even describe my podcast to someone else? I ask this because I don't eve know. I concentrate on the historical but i cover a wide breadth of topics. Obviously i enjoy films, shows, art, literature, mythology, religion, and all matter of topics. Is there really any reason to narrow the focus? Sorry for the rambling im a bit drunk (maybe).

I'm looking at the below topics with Richard Barrett

1) Four Feathers and British Imperialism broadly

2) Homeschooling its pros/cons + our different experiences with health issues and how to deal

3) Malay Emergency and other "successful" counter insurgencies.

4) Civilization vs. Barbarism (looking at the book Against the Grain: A Deep History of the Earliest States)

My own shit

I. Humans and Dogs the story of us

II. Vikings (yes im reviewing the first 4 seasons)

III. Salazar , dictator of Portugal

IV. D'Annunzio , poet proto fascist

V. Rusty's Metaphysics lmao...piecemeal most likely instead of some overblown long episode. I love philosophy but I shouldn't have spent so much time on it in retrospect. As a consequence i will make episodes about my ontology and epistemology. I will even dip into the spiritual and religious. I'm sorry guys but i was likely suppose to be a shaman or medicine man really hahah. I'll try to contain the woo woo but hey this is me.

VI. Caribbean adventures...i may or may not have spent more than a year on the islands...

Yes the topics are scattered, but the topic that seems the most out of place is movie and TV shows discussions. Mythology, religion, politics, history, war, etc., being so richly interwoven, feel like a common theme of the show, whether you're doing an episode by yourself about dogs, or a show about killing in the ancient world with some guests. Art is tied in to those things too, but it seems to me that any conversation about a specific movie will always be disparate from the other topics, by virtue of its specificity. You don't always discuss a single show or movie of course, the conversations about 80s actions movies are more inline with the other shows thematically, because they encompass an entire cultural phenomenon and that lends more to meta discussion. But even then, the art is more recent and doesn't compare to conversations about eras that have come and gone completely. Also, film is a subset of all art, so again, it feels quite specific in a show that talks about say, Spengler. Some shows do talk about anything and everything, like Rogan, but he's doing interviews with people with all kinds of expertise so its natural to bounce around.

Is there a reason to narrow the focus? Yes, I can think of at least one. The first one that comes to mind is that you can't describe your podcast. If I wanted to recommend your show because I like the discussions on Athenian warfare and Themistocles and somebody pulls up your podcast and they find a show about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, they might be confused. Is that a deal breaker? I don't know, but it seems like people might be less inclined to give it a chance if they had something specific in mind. Maybe half the time when I'm looking for a podcast, its because there is something I want to know about. The other podcasts I find are recommendations or podcasters from other shows that seem interesting. Maybe a potential fix is splitting the show, do one show on movies and film, and on the other show stick to the other format.

Anyway, take all of this with a grain of salt, cus you're the host and maybe you have a vision. I'm just one guy and I'm biased towards the topics I like and the format I like. Again, in all of this I'm trying to be constructive and I do like the show.

This got me thinking about how all we get to watch now is superhero or woke. The Netflix Top 10 is wamen protagonist or kid’s movies. My goodness, the trailer for Foundation is so woke I’m not going to watch it, just like that awful Watchmen: two of my very favorite stories ruined.
