Rome v. USMC

'Rome, Sweet Rome': Could a Single Marine Unit Destroy the Roman Empire?
James Erwin was browsing Reddit on his lunch break when a thread piqued his interest. A user called The_Quiet_Earth had posed the question: "Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern U.S. Marine infantry battalion or MEU?"

. . .

In the reddit story, however, Erwin said the Marines would not be resupplied with bullets, batteries, or gasoline from the modern world. "There would be no way of obtaining replacements for these supplies in the ancient world," Goldsworthy says. "An average unit of Marines is not likely to be able to make an oil refinery, start generating electricity, or create machine tools to make spare parts for equipment." And even if they could figure it out, it would take many months or even years. So, as soon as the Marines ran out of gas, their tanks would become little more than hunks of metal.

. . .

Erwin's reddit story stipulates that no more Marines will come back in time, although they may recruit in the ancient world. The Marines would have to; even at their lowest periods, the Roman Empire could conscript hundreds of thousands of soldiers whenever it wanted.

So, what's the point spread?

Without resupply? The Romans would rout the Marines with ease, an industrial military is entirely dependant on its industrial logistics tail.

Jesus Christ dude. The fuckers fought off stunning defeats against Hannibal and someone is seriously asking how they would fare against a scout recon platoon?

The defeat at Cannae shows what the Marines would be facing, surrounded and in full knowledge of their certain anihilation, 50,000 Romans none the less fought to the last man. Even if the Marines had a full battle load to start off with, wouldn't be long before they were simply out of ammo and then overrun, wouldn't last more than a couple days.

Bear in mind, the Romans would expend waves of Auxilliaries downrange to soak up the Marines fire, before they ever closed in to finish them off with the Legions.

Even implying they attempted to go black ops on the republic I find the whole premise dubious.

The better strategy would be to hand pick Green Beret language masters, because for Unconventional Warfare, they're going to have learn ancient Latin which is a dead language which no one knows how to speak.

A 6000 strong unit of archers from Crecy could do more damage and they could re-supply themselves with longbows and arrows. If they could recruit enough followers I'd back them to take Rome.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Nah, they could never take Rome itself, not even Hannibal tried that, once you get to the city, the Romans will fight street to street, house to house, hand to hand, all of them, and there's like a million of them.
