When I say “fairness,” I mean the same rules apply to everyone, but an egalitarian means “it’s not fair he has an ice cream and I don’t.”

“Equitable” in egalitarian-speak means nurses are the equivalent of engineers so should be paid the same.

In an Egalitarian world, there actually IS a gender pay gap, because the reasons don’t matter, only that it’s equal in the end.

I absolutely agree with ALL of this.

Each of those statements points out the problem of result-oriented thinking.

The problem isn't that we desire 'equitable' outcomes. The problem is when we ignore how we get them.

The only goal is to keep people from using violence to accomplish their personal goals, and that only because in a violent world most of us would be slaves. Obviously, through history, violence was the operating principle, and slavery was the circumstantial fact. The Enlightenment was intelligence overcoming muscle, but that required intelligence, or at least the indoctrination of the unintelligent.

I would probably phrase it as "principles overcoming muscle," and "indoctrination of the unprincipled," but, yeah, that all tracks for me.

Either way, I think it is a huge miscalculation to assume it is a lack of intelligence driving people to odious ideas and movements. Orwell had it right when he said "Some ideas are so stupid that only intellectuals believe them."

You have to be pretty clever to wrap your mind around a really terrible idea.
