I'm going to stop using the word "Coronavirus" since I don't even know what that means (besides shape)? What if I switch to "respiratory" viruses?
The full name is Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 is the disease. Coronavirus disease 2019.

I think the WHO is running interference. Complicating things to make it hard to discuss. We have problems talking about things that are unnamed.

COVID-19 is a pretty boring disease, so I should have as boring as name as, say "influenza". Maybe "affecta"? Or "impacta"? Or how about "inconvienza"?

Here's my rewrite:

COVID19

There's lots of respiratory, meaning they affect your breathing, viruses, thousands maybe? The common flu is also a respiratory virus, which is why COVID19 is often compared to the flu, and rightly so, regardless of any sanctimonious posturing about life & death you might hear. The various flu strains are estimated to kill about 50K people a year but the actual cause of death is normally listed as pneumonia, which has many causes, so it's difficult to tell, which is different than COVID19 which is listed as the cause of death, even when fever was the actual cause. It's mostly dangerous to older people with compromised breathing, or weakened immune systems. The common cold also comes from viruses, some in the same family as COVID19, and there's no vaccines for colds or the flu, only a partial vaccine, called a “flu shot” that older people are encouraged to take every year even though its effectiveness is questionable. There's no drugs that cure either. Everybody can get these viruses, though there are few cases of a child passing COVID19 to an adult.

Masks don't prevent people from catching a virus because viruses are way too small. Masks just stop those who are contagious from sneezing on the food at the grocery store, where it remains infectious for a couple days, but masks seem to placate people; makes them think their doing something proactive in this time of emergency, even if they are ridiculously. Because there are and never have been any vaccines or cures for respiratory viruses, several nations did not lockdown, but decided to let the virus spread naturally, which showed that lockdowns don't do much to stop the spread of COVID19, though they do facilitate authoritarians.

The point of masks is not so much to prevent you from getting sick, but from you getting other people sick. If everybody does it, then the odds that anybody gets sick at all diminish a great deal. I realize this is a difficult concept for liberty people to grasp here, but bear with me.. It's like when a dude doesn't wear any pants and he pisses on your leg. If you are wearing shorts, then you have no protection. If you are wearing pants, you get a little protection. If the other guy wears pants, then you probably are going to be okay. Don't be the jackass without pants. Wear a mask.

Not to be that person, but... "There's lot of respiratory, meaning they affect your breathing, viruses, thousands maybe?"

Who or what is going to be your audience? As "eloquent" as you write, you may conciser re-writing the first sentence if this is meant to go to the general public. Most people will get confused by the way the sentence is constructed. You may want to just put the word virus next to the word respiratory, that's an opinion, but take it as you may.

It's not really just a respiratory disease. It causes organ failure in the heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys. It damages tissues in the brain. The reason people were being put on ventilators is that their blood has little to no oxygen, but in NYC doctors are reassessing that strategy and discussing treating it almost like a high altitude sickness. Some of the frontline doctors are starting to consider it more of a blood disease, but I don't know if that will stand either. We are only just now figuring out how the disease actually kills.

A neighbor is an ICU nurse treating the covid patients dying at the hospital here. She said this virus is fucking nuts in how it can attack your body. Lots of people seem fine, but then some people get destroyed, and it's not necessarily based on age either.

You probably don’t know this, but Respiratory viruses aren’t passed via urine. I could piss on your legs all I want.
