Re: Coronavirus thread
Here's my COVID19 script for an upcoming podcast:
There's lots of Corona viruses, thousands maybe? They're respiratory, meaning they affect your breathing. COVID19 is the19th unique, or novel one, like Bird, and Swine flus were novel corona viruses. The common flu is also a Corona virus, which is why COVID19 is often compared to the flu, and rightly so, regardless of any sanctimonious posturing about life & death you might hear. The various flu strains are estimated to kill about 50K people a year but the actual numbers are closer to 5K which makes COVID19 more deadly, at least to older people with compromised breathing, or weakened immune systems. There's no vaccine for the flu, and no cures, only a partial vaccine, called a “flu shot” that older people are encouraged to take every year even though its effectiveness is questionable. Everybody can get these viruses, though there's few cases of a child passing COVID19 to an adult.
Masks don't prevent people from catching a virus because they are way too small. Masks just stop people who are contagious from sneezing on the food at the grocery store, where it remains infectious for a couple days, but masks seem to placate people; makes them think their doing something proactive in this time of emergency, even if they are ridiculously. Because several nations did not lockdown but decided to let the virus spread naturally, there's pretty good data that shows lockdowns don't do much to stop the spread of COVID19, though they do facilitate authoritarians hiding behind sanctimony.

What the fuck are you smoking?Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 1:14 pmIt's kind of sad that the reason nobody is going to want to negotiate with conservatives is the craziness. If they weren't so crazy, I am sure we could loosen things a little with the understanding it's probably going to tighten up again by Fall. But you can't negotiate with crazy.
Really, it's worse than crazy. Most crazy people know they are crazy. They have some idea that these fucked up thought patterns can cause them trouble. Conservatives out on the streets right now don't even see it. They think this is anywhere between a hoax and "just a flu, bro", and it's fucking bonkers.
You are your own worse enemies here. And if the fatalities skyrocket in the republican states, the GOP is fucking cooked come Nov.
Conservatives are fighting this because we have shut the country down for a super-minority of infections.
This entire thing is insane.

I don't think the bird and swine flu were corona viruses. SARS and MERS were, though. COVID is closer to the common cold than the flu.Martin Hash wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 9:01 amHere's my COVID19 script for an upcoming podcast:

Things were shut down in order to prevent the hospitals from being overwhelmed. Look at places like Italy, New York, France, Spain, Ecuador, etc. where areas were hit so hard that they can't keep up with care and then can't keep up with disposing of the dead bodies. The Conservative wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 9:02 amWhat the fuck are you smoking?

The deaths aren't exponentially higher BECAUSE we shut things down.
We can't shut down long term. On that I agree. There is not a one size fits all solution in a country as large and diverse (in terms of rural/urban, etc.) as ours. Lets be sensible about it and also considerate of those who may be a risk of dying from this. The whole "I'm not afraid of this" would be fine if you couldn't pass it around to others (some of which could die from it) for days without even knowing you were infected.
People on both sides have lost their minds during this. Leave it to America to turn what should be a unifying problem into just another excuse to hate others and rage against everything they don't agree with. This is coming from a mostly conservative person who is embarrassed by some of the words and actions coming from fellow conservatives.

Colds are Rhinovirus
Actually, “cold” is a tough word to pin down; after reading about Corona virus, it is a lot of colds.

Covid 19 is the 6th corona virus not the 19th. The 19 refers to 2019, the year it was first identified.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Thx. That’s why I posted this one here first before recording. I’m laying a walking path around my house and ignoring the news.

If you managed to reach the end of that gif, you'll see that it was created/sponsored by the Michigan state government. I was referring to their functionally retarded governor as 'she'.The Conservative wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 8:56 amLess than 1% of the country is even effected. What are you smoking?
