I think we can confidently place Trump's personal culpability somewhere between 0 and 100%, non-inclusive.
As I see it, them main problem with Trump's leadership is that he is unfocused, disorganized, and spotty on important details. The initial White House plan of mitigation and herd immunity could have been the best course if it had been paired with a targeted roll out of stimulus directed at the most vulnerable, allowing them to stay home and socially distance.
Instead of being very clear and intentional about the reasoning and goals of such a plan, Trump spent the first weeks bloviating about how our death rates were superb, and we were already handling everything great. As ever, he seemed more concerned with being perceived as doing a great job, and less focused on actually doing any job at all.
So . . . if only he would've rolled out a stimulus to the "most vulnerable" before their identities were even known, he woulda done better. Yeah, precognition would definitely be a plus in situations like these. Unfortunately, until states started locking down industries no one really knew who those lionized "most vulnerable" people would be. Coulda been Walmart workers. That would've been my guess. But WalMart stayed open, so it looks like I would've failed the precognitive COVID response test too
Ah well.

I would have settled for an actual containment strategy that included:
testing that actually could have caught community spread.
Production or purchase of sufficient test kits to actually detect and contain new outbreaks.
The mass procurement of PPE starting in early Feb when it was obvious the pandemic was coming.
Complete shutting down of nonessential travel, especially by foreigners into the US by the first week of Feb.
A federal government that does NOT steal resources from states as Trump's administration has done (and is still doing) and then blame those states for their lack of resources.
A president who takes ownership of his failures, especially when they resulted in mass casualties one can compare to things like the Vietnam War.
One could go on with a long list of reasons why this guy deserves to get literally booted from the White House in the wake of this debacle, but for me -- at the individual level -- I choose not to vote for anybody who actually decided my life was worth less than the preservation of wealth and privilege by a tiny economic elite who created the fragility that made this so terrible in the first place.

You don't say.
The question is whether I can punish those who actually carried this out. Fact is, I can. So can every other American who has the right to vote. I suspect that day could be coming too. They didn't drag that guy away from his hilarious covid pressers because they thought he had Nov already in the bag..

If replacing a light bulb is the same as punishing a light bulb, I guess.
Seems like you got a light bulb either way to me.

Eh.
To me, elections are a kind of political economy. The argument you are making here is that it doesn't matter, so vote for the guy who just got 50k+ Americans killed in a horrific death. But my argument is this: if Americans ignored that nonsense and started replacing people who make these kinds of decisions, then eventually the political demand for a better politician will result in a better politician.
You have shitty politicians because you convince yourself to lower your expectations to such a low point that you are willing to reelect a man that fucked up the response to a pandemic so badly that the casualties resulting from that fuck up are comparable to the Vietnam War (and they are still piling up). I would argue that is a poor strategy and a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Just start tossing them out. Don't fucking vote for Biden either. People should just write in whatever.

I mean.. do whatever you want, really. I don't pretend like this is some super power. I just refuse to reward it with what little effect my vote might have. I think you should do you, and if you like Trump, then go for it. Whatever. I am going to do shrooms and spend my pandemic like the Decamaron intended.
