If we are immune after recovery, then we could start doing that with recovery certificates, for example. But we don't know about immunity yet and we still do not have comprehensive testing.
The republicans making these decisions are making ideological decisions. Their ideology is telling them the facts, not actual research results. This is a really bad way to make decisions and it could easily blow up in their faces. If there those states see large resurgence in their respective epidemics, the republican party is going to get wrecked in Nov.
Outside of politics, I’m saying it doesn’t really matter. They have no choice. Our system simply isn’t built to do this.
Either we buckle up and get working, or we face a major civilizations collapse.
So the question you have to ask yourself is whether it is more reasonable to potentially send hundreds of thousands of people to their deaths with no positive effect on a collapsing economy or to alter the economic system that is so obviously unsuitable to continued existence. I would argue the entire economic and political systems have proven themselves unworthy of existence. We need new systems. It's probably going to collapse no matter what we do, and I sure as shit am not okay with throwing away the lives of hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of poor people just so the wealthy elite who created this jackass system don't lose their riches. Sorry. Not on board.
This favoring of markets and money is precisely why the economy is collapsing. Had they shut down travel and trade and implemented basic epidemic mitigation early, we'd not be in this position. But, as Taleb points out, they didn't want to spend pennies so they now have to spend dollars. I would add they don't want to even spend dollars now so it's probably just going to collapse. This is why Jesus is not okay with people who worship money. It leads to poor outcomes.
I agree completely.
But we aren’t likely to change the economic system any time soon, other than a full Collapse scenario.
The choice at the moment is simply to reopen business or not. Given those two options, there is no choice. Even if the collapse is imminent, the food system needs to be fully operational to avoid exponentially more damage and suffering.
There are many people, a third of the population perhaps, some on this forum, who WANT the world to collapse. Always remember that because why get involved in a disingenuous debate with a Doomer?

I think this system is probably collapsing no matter what we do. Locking the poor folk in steerage while the ship sinks isn't going to fortify your body from the ice-cold water.

Your analogy works perfectly. Why wouldn’t you give them a fighting chance to feed themselves and get some sort of supplies or savings together.

I do want the system to collapse. I honestly can’t believe it’s gone on for this long, with fiat money and incalculable corruption. Because I want to see the new system - not because I’d enjoy mass suffering.
Amendment: I will actually enjoy the Cleansing of gated communities. For at least a little while.

If they have an outdated mp3 player but not an ipod does that make them a Zuner Doomer?
