I don’t think anyone has proposed ordering businesses and employees to operate. Simply removing the restrictions.
Anyway, we have a Classic Pascal Wager here. 2 possibilities:
1 - immunity is real.
We have to open up as soon as possible, because to do otherwise is suicide. For the many, not the few that would actually get sick and die. We get to herd immunity quicker, some portion dies, end of crisis.
2 - there is no immunity
We have to open up as soon as possible, because there is no other viable option. No treatment or vaccine is anywhere on the horizon, and mass casualties result either way. Might as well produce goods for those that will survive.
Either way, we can’t stay shut down indefinitely. People will die regardless.

And nobody is arguing that we should shut down indefinitely.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 4:15 pmI don’t think anyone has proposed ordering businesses and employees to operate. Simply removing the restrictions.

What I actually am arguing is that all of this discussion is fucking pointless until we learn some basic facts about this disease and what the situation actually is out there. Our federal government made that almost impossible up until now (even now they are worse than apathetically doing nothing).
We need to know if we are going to be immune after recovery.
We need to know how many people have antibodies if there is immunity.
We need to figure out a decent treatment protocol that staves off all the organ damage.
As far as I can see we only have maybe 5% of the population at most having been infected, and that's a generous number btw. We have over 50k fatalities and probably three times that number of the recovered already set for lifelong disability.
We don't even know exactly how this disease is killing people. It turns out a lot of the assumptions going into this thing were dead wrong.
You cannot "get America back to work" without first answering those questions. It's just retarded. It's a retarded discussion by dumbasses who just want to bitch and make this worse for everybody than it already is.

Re: Who Will Hollywood Scapegoat For China?
again, what is the alternative?
We are already at the point of possible food shortages. 6 major packing plants shut down last week. And more to come, without a doubt.
The fact that the system is so pathetically fragile is why we can’t afford to actually deal with the virus. It’s still out there. Cases are still climbing. The simple fact is that we don’t have time to come up with a cure.
We can run this out for a few more weeks, but you can’t reopen the economy in the middle of a currency collapse. It will be too late.

Discussing "alternatives" when you have no idea about the basic situation is pointless. There is nothing to discuss here that is not incredibly hypothetical.
Every alternative -- every single possible solution -- is contingent upon the results of several lines of research and the results of mass testing. Discuss away, but don't act like we can realistically implement anything until we find out if we can even achieve immunity.
Most of these dumbass market conservative solutions hinge upon the premise of achieving herd immunity by killing a few hundred thousand workers. But if we can't even ever get herd immunity, what good is that solution -- regardless of the intellectually decayed, moral repugnance inherent in it?

guess we're about to find out
get busy living or get busy dyingReopening of America accelerates as states prepare to relax coronavirus restrictions
https://www.thehour.com/news/article/Re ... 226336.php
Ready or not, America is opening back up.
The process that began in recent days with back-in-business nail salons and unbarred sandy beaches in a scattering of states is poised to accelerate over the coming week across wide swaths of the country. After shutting down much of American life in March and keeping people home throughout April, governors are preparing to lift restrictions as the calendar turns to May - and cross their fingers that the novel coronavirus doesn't come roaring back.

If it gets much worse, republicans are fucked, though. Hopefully they grok that.

Simple answer is that we could have reacted much sooner. But we didn’t. Now we’re trapped in a bad situation that can only be made worse.
Might as well get to work.

If we are immune after recovery, then we could start doing that with recovery certificates, for example. But we don't know about immunity yet and we still do not have comprehensive testing.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 5:19 pmSimple answer is that we could have reacted much sooner. The republicans making these decisions are making ideological decisions. Their ideology is telling them the facts, not actual research results. This is a really bad way to make decisions and it could easily blow up in their faces. If there those states see large resurgence in their respective epidemics, the republican party is going to get wrecked in Nov.

Outside of politics, I’m saying it doesn’t really matter. They have no choice. Our system simply isn’t built to do this.Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 6:35 pmIf we are immune after recovery, then we could start doing that with recovery certificates, for example. Either we buckle up and get working, or we face a major civilizations collapse.

So the question you have to ask yourself is whether it is more reasonable to potentially send hundreds of thousands of people to their deaths with no positive effect on a collapsing economy or to alter the economic system that is so obviously unsuitable to continued existence. I would argue the entire economic and political systems have proven themselves unworthy of existence. We need new systems. It's probably going to collapse no matter what we do, and I sure as shit am not okay with throwing away the lives of hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of poor people just so the wealthy elite who created this jackass system don't lose their riches. Sorry. Not on board.
This favoring of markets and money is precisely why the economy is collapsing. Had they shut down travel and trade and implemented basic epidemic mitigation early, we'd not be in this position. But, as Taleb points out, they didn't want to spend pennies so they now have to spend dollars. I would add they don't want to even spend dollars now so it's probably just going to collapse. This is why Jesus is not okay with people who worship money. It leads to poor outcomes.
