You young folks don't get that back in my day (the early 90's) folks wouldn't do stuff like that. Even neologisms were frowned upon. I knew a guy who sent out a fax that said lol, and me and four other dudes whaled on his ass. It was not out of hate, it was out of fear. We didn't know if that was some kind of spy code and if this dude was a spy for the Russians or what. We couldn't have known. Those were bad times.
