Gun Lasers or No?

Post by DBTrek » Tue Apr 14, 2020 5:47 pm

I've recently picked up red dot lasers for my home protection guns. It's something I've been meaning to do for a while, but haven't gotten around to until 'shelter in place' gave me some extra time to get things done. Now, I'm trained on guns so for me a laser always seemed like an added bonus but not a necessity. But I got to thinking about my wife, who is not formally firearm trained, and how she might handle a gun if she had to grab one in the middle of the night.

That's what sold me on the idea of the lasers. I figure zeroing a laser on her revolver at about 3m would be sufficient. For an indoor engagement 3m seems like a reasonable distance - you should still hit human sized targets closer or further away with enough accuracy to be effective.

But I go to these pro firearm sites and see tons of people talking shit about lasers.
"I KNOW HOW TO USE IRON SIGHTS LIKE A MAN!"
"I DON'T NEED SOME HELPER DOT TO SHOOT WELL!"
"REAL SHOOTERS DON'T NEED SPECIAL OLYMPIC POINTERS"
So on and so forth.

What gives? Why are folks hating on gun lasers? Do you use them, or are you a gun laser hater?

A friend has one on his crossbow, seemed a bit gimmicky to me on a crossbow.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

I wouldn't put a laser on a wheelgun, nor anything else

Ruins the aesthetic

No, I'm not a better shooter than him.
I opted for this on one my Springfield XD subcompact.

(Jump to 1:14 to see it on a shed, in the dark, at 25m)

I like it, but it seems barrel-heavy when the mag is out.
With the extended mag in it feels great, and I love having 16 shots, laser, and flashlight, all in something I can almost palm with my hand.

The revolver just got a Centerfire red dot, mounted under the barrel.
Looking forward to getting it to the range after lockdown to see how it handles.

I did . . . because a Ruger LCR gives me problems beyond 20'. The barrel is so short that any amount of trigger pull will mess you up badly.

Put this guy on:

"But will a laser stop you from pulling the trigger to damn hard?"

"Shut up man, let me enjoy my toy"
