Even the head chef is still an NCO in terms of overall rank in a hotel. The officer class is the management. The chef will have a kitchen manager as his captain so it ends up us and them if the officers are a bunch of know-nothing Ruperts. It's the officers who do the micromanaging not chef. A good chef is the Sgt that his troops will follow over the top.
Good Sergeants are way more laid back than Chefs

In the Canadian Army is was kind of like the SAS, you had to motivate yourself, to be elite
The best chefs aren't all shouty and looking over your shoulder like Gordon Ramsay. The best ones are more nurturing and helping you to shine like Heston Blumenthal or Anthony Bourdain.

Chefs are like instructors on a recruit course, but that's not what battalion is like

I guess the main difference is a chef is trying his hardest to make sure nobody dies as a result of his work. ;)
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

When I joined the Canadian Army it was the Best Small Army in the World

Every single man down to the lowest Private was a Chef unto himself

We were more like Green Berets than conventional NATO infantry back then

I'd have served under him in a heartbeat.

That's how they punished us in the army, they pulled us off the line and made us do women's work

Pah, I bet you couldn't name a single top chef who is a chick without Googling it.
Not really the point though, we're talking about why we love our jobs.
