What ifs of 1529

Post by katarn »

What if Suleyman managed to take the city in one of their assaults, or winter were not so terrible? Would the Ottomans have been able to advance much farther into Europe? How would other European nations have reacted?

I tend to think the Ottomans couldn't have moved much farther or for long. Spring would bring the response of any Habsburg forces left in the area, and years following, especially if the Ottomans continued to advance, would see a response from nearby European powers that would soon outpace Ottoman military technology.

And in my soul am free,

Enjoy such Liberty" - Richard Lovelace

People barely had rights and guilds owned professions, monopolies were handed out like candy by kings. You could be burned as a witch for bs, holy wars over eternal souls. I could go on. WTF are you talking about awesome civilization?

You could be burned as a witch for bs,
You have to put it in context. The Spanish people had just kicked out the moors. There is documented evidence that certain special tribe of people held down the Spanish towns as a rear guard and collected taxes for the moors so that the army could keep advancing while they invaded Iberia. That alone is part of the reason Jews were forced to convert or die during the inquisition. Your "bs" reasons for people getting tortured is largely a romantic notion. People just tortured back then. The inquisition was not special in that regard. Some heretical sects were persecuted along side the Jews it is true, but at the time the people were undergoing a violent reactionary movement, sponsored by papistry, after liberating their land from foreign invaders.

The "foreign invaders" had by then living in Spain for 700 years. The Muslims invaders had it easy because the Arianist Christian rulers were loath by the general Catholic Christian population, and Jews.

When Grenada capitulated, the surrender agreement promised all Muslims, legal rights including the right to practice their religion. The Spanish expel them at the same time as the Jews. Mainly for practicing their religion.

My history of Spain is not that good. But

Moors conquered Spain about 700 CE.
New World "discovered" in 1492.
Grenada falls in 1492.
Expulsion of both Jews and (Grenadian)Moors in 1500. :-)
Cortez's ethnic cleansing in 1529.
Conversos executed, or expelling over the next 200 years

Most Jews converted to keep from dying.
Supposedly the Jews, Moors, and Conversos were being bad. They all wealth, influence, and the converts also held influential posts. I believe all that wealth, influence, and positions went to the nobles who had been pushing for the expulsions.
