Nah, you'd just get a good sing song around the old Joanna. A few rounds of ''roll out the barrel'' and ''knees up mother Brown'' then the local bobby would give you a lift home and tuck you into bed.

You'd need to go up to Smitty's old stomping ground in Glasgow if you wanted a decent punch up.

So Dick comes from Richard. Something about the way Danes couldn't pronounce something right. I think they didn't like Normans or something.

Strictly speaking, the Normans were Danes and maybe Norwegians who had settled in northern France.TheReal_ND wrote: Fri Mar 20, 2020 5:13 pm So Dick comes from Richard. Something about the way Danes couldn't pronounce something right. I think they didn't like Normans or something.
I don't know about the pronouncing thing, I just thought it was a shortening of Richard.
A little googling turned up this...
Back in the 12th and 13th centuries, due to the need to handwrite everything, short versions of names were quite common, to save time writing. Richard was therefore often shortened to Rich, Ric, or Rick. Also at the time, rhyming nicknames were quite common, so Richard often became Dick or Hick (see also: Bob and Bill). Hick never really stood the test of time, but obviously there was something appealing about Dick.

Normans were Norwegian that settled northern France that's not even a maybe that's fact. As far as being Danes I don't think so. There may have been some Viking nobility intermarriage I'm unaware of. If I'm not mistaken, they could have been under Dane thumb that seemed to be the power house. Also, I think the Danes had been in England prior to the Normans for some centuries

Normans were Norsemen or North men in modern English. Otern and Bjorn can battle it out to take responsibility for where they came from.
