Community spread of SARS-2 in the US has officially begun, but we only found out because the patients are in intensive care and fighting for their lives. Because the CDC refused to look for community spread, there is no telling how many people were infected by their delay as well.
Yesterday, Representative Ami Bera (D, CA-7), who represents parts of Sacramento County near to where the patient is, said that there was a four day gap in the federal government’s response to a request from local medical officials for COVID-19 testing for the patient. The CDC reiterated their claim that they were first contacted on the 23rd, as opposed to Rep. Bera’s claim that Sacramento County officials contacted them on the 19th. The CDC stated that they received samples from the patient on the 25th and confirmed the presence of the virus on the 26th. No explanation for the discrepancy was offered by the CDC.

Three confirmed transmissions in the US now, and those only got tested when the CDC was forced due to the fact that these people are fighting for their lives and doctors pressed the issue. There is no telling how strong this thing is right now. We are essentially in the same boat as the Iranians whose government also tried to hide the pandemic until they could no longer pretend it wasn't a problem.
This was what people were saying would happen when the CDC decided they would not even look for SARS-2 unless the person traveled from China or was in direct contact with a known infected. Then they could go on television and claim they found no evidence of community spread (because they refused to test for it).
