Montreal didn't even care, the Expos died from a lack of support, there's no reason to mention them.

I trash the Blue Jays for being a second class team, but they do actually make money.
Dont give them too much credit in that regard they are in a division with some of the best well traveled richest fan bases in the sport.
The owners of the Blue Jays is Rogers Communications, it's a $24 billion company.

The ownership is rich, it's just cheap, they have no competition, so they don't spend the money.

The potential fanbase is the largest in MLB, it's the entire country of Canada, 37 million people for one team.

Canada is just cheap, Canada is a country where everybody plays small ball, nobody goes big time.

It's just the culture
Is that how Toronto see themselves? I think you got plenty of competition. If you are in Vancouver, why not Seattle?

Hell, why not the Yankees or Red Sox?
You put a Canadian football team in New York, Chicago and LA ain't going to give a shit.

They've got no competition in the Canadian market.

The company that owns the team is the cable company.

Their only competitor is Bell.

But it's really a duopoly.

So the Blue Jays are the only MLB option in Canada.

They have a monopoly as far as baseball in this market.

The cable company here isn't in the US market, this is a government protected market here.

They don't have another team is this market to compete with them. The Expos were that team, they're gone.

Bear in mind they also own MLSE

That's the Leafs and the Raptors.

So they are competing with themselves basically.

They own everything.

They are in the same division as New York and Boston. They travel well to games and don't forget when visiting they get half the gate. So yankee stadium and Fenway pay well. Hell Tampa has some snowbirds that love to go to Canada in the Summer.
Rogers doesn't even care, it's a soulless corporation, it's just content, they don't care if the team wins or loses, they make money when it loses, so there's no impetus to build a winner, it's not like they're under any pressure to win.
Well their baseball operations dont seem to know that. Scouting department is good. Farm system is decent. They run a good mid market team. And when you are in the same division as Yankees, Redsox put that checkbook down, you cant compete especially when you consider tax implications.

It's not the checkbook, they have the money, there's no tax advantage in NY nor Mass, the taxes are the same.

Most players just don't want to play in Canada, they'd just rather play in the US, it's not money, it's just culture.

The taxes are just as high in New York and Boston.

But even if the Jays offer same money, MLB players would just rather be Yankees or Red Sox

maybe NY, maybe. But Boston is not as bad tax wise, especially for a US citizen. I get it about the culture, but if you're a young player you don't have much choice anyway.

Fair enough, my wife is arguing the same, tho winter is worse in Boston than it is here.

Frankly, if I was a player, my dream would be to play at Fenway for the faithful, it's the Pantheon.

Yankee Stadium is gone, the Green Monster is the holy grail now.

Go Astros. I was rooting for the Nats until their fans showed what low-class dipshits they are by booing Trump and flashing their itty-bitties in game 5. Ok, so the flashing was kinda cool, but that area doesn't deserve a WS title for the poor treatment they gave a POTUS. If they do win I hope Trump takes credit for it.
