I've never been to prison, except military detention for a short stay.

I do have acquaintances who are rougher than I am tho. I know a guy who just recently got out of the Pen here.

He beat the piss out of some guy with a bat. He got over two years less a day, which is the Pen.

He says guys in the Pen try to keep the peace, it's only when somebody breaks the rules that trouble occurs.

He says the detention centers are the worst, that's where most of the violence happens.

I like to watch a lot of YouTube channels from ex cons. That's really the only source of insight I have into prisons. But they say the same things. It's the lower security prisons where races are mixing and rules not enforced that shit tends to kick off in a big way. If each of the races keep the separations strictly enforced, and they police their own, then the really big problems tend to happen less frequently.

It's just where they hold people pending sentencing, so there's constant turnover, it's volatile.

Guys doing hard time don't get into shit unless they have to

There's a pecking order and most guys follow the rules.

I had a good buddy in the army who was in the Pen but got a pardon after so he could join the army.

He said the same thing, it can be rough, but only if you are a rat or you break the rules.

It's not like Pen is safe, shit does happen, but its much less dangerous than detention.

Thing about lower security jail is that it's mixed, hardened criminals alongside people who never been in jail.

The Pen is where you learn the rules, they tell you what the rules are when you get there.

Detention is disorganized, unstable, there is no pecking order, so the hardened criminals will compete for power.
