I don't know what kind of shape you are in, but you don't have to be super fit going in.

It's more of a grind, my Quebecois Legion buddy wanted to be a warrior monk.

How the FFL's training works sounds alot like it was for myself during my conscript days, in the sense of building up recruits who could be in truly bad physical shape. They had us start with running one kilometers once a week, ended up nine months later with running ten twice a week. For those most physically unfit, who kept finishing last, one of the sergeants took them aside halfway into the conscript period and had them run a simple a one kilometer run. They had no problem with that and when the unfit people had started, they struggled with the one kilometer run. Most of them returned from that run smiling, even if most of us were teasing them about being coddled. Some still finished last in the ten km runs, but not as far behind as they used to.

They build up your confidence in yourself by making self-improvement undeniably true and possible.

Oh, and I don’t know if still applies or if army issued socks in France are better quality, but wear tennis socks ("tube socks"?) underneath the military issue socks. Prevents blisters and chafing.

One thing tho, when it comes to tactics, they are very aggressive in the field and in contact.

They have an ethos which embraces danger.

It's mission over men. They go in hard and fast, and they are expendable.

That's the Esprit de Corps which makes them shock troops in effect, death before dishonor.
