Trump and the Gipper are the backlash to the New Dealers, which is FDR.

They are only related in that they change the status quo and bring a new way of doing things.

Lincoln makes the Federal Government the king of all States
FDR brings the beginning of socializing government
Trump - will be known for how he transforms government

I agree Trump and the Gipper are the backlash, I don't think you necessarily get a Trump without a Gipper. But it goes beyond the leader too. If you look at the dominance of Congress during these periods you see the leaders party dominating Congress. From 1860 to 1932 the GOP are the dominate party. 1932 to present, it's been the Dems. I think from 2016 on the next 80 years approx. will be GOP dominated, following the Trump model.
