Most shotguns employed by the military in the ACW were double barrel break action.

They called them Messenger Guns because they were issued to stage coach drivers delivering messages.

They were 10 or 12 gauge and they loaded shells which were pretty similar to what you have now.

Those shells in the War of Northern Aggression were all brass though. Paper shells came along a little later. I imagine full brass shotgun shells weren't quite as efficient and must have been pretty damn heavy to tote around.

Believe it or not I did go to school for nearly a year and I remember clearly being taught about the civil war with a very sympathetic angle for Southerners. That was in like 02 though. I doubt it's the same now.

I caught a fish with my bare hands this summer in the river.

Scooped it into the air and unto shore.

Then I threw it back.

Was a Yellow Perch; not worth eating, too boney.

I did that with spawning salmon in Alaska. Of course I threw it back. Only the natives can catch em like that. Too easy and the meats no good anyway. The row is good tho
