Would academia be better off without Marxism?

Universities and colleges would improve academically if only...

They stopped teaching Marxist and/or Socialist past and present ideas to students.

Faculty leaders were less inclined to give in to social pressures by offended parties, no matter the origin.

Would academia be better off without Marxism?

Post by BjornP » Fri Sep 06, 2019 10:34 pm

If your college student children were given a copy of Marx's "The Communist Manifesto" in say, history or sociology class, how offended would you be? Would you wish for that scenario not being likely? Stressing "likely", because I'm not asking if you want anything banned or made illegal, simply if you think academia would improve if Marxist or "Marxist" (by the MHF's various definitions of that word) ideas weren't presented at colleges and universities?

Or would you simply be content with today's US academia being less activistic and prone to social pressures by offended parties?

Sure, but if no one was taught about Marxism and what Marxism is, then that thing will simply pop up again in a century or three under another name. The heretical Catholic Fraticelli monks were, by the broad definition of "Marxism" used on this forum, for example, Marxist... long before Marx.

Would be nice if the academics didn't have so many marxists shining marxism's shit and trying to sell it to students. Teaching them about it is one thing, that's perfectly fine, making it out to be a great idea that isn't an epic failure every time it's tried, is another.

It's a political theory that is actually quite advanced. Who here has read the tome Das Kapital? I'm willing to bet one or two at most. Total slog fest. I wish these social marxists were so well read. In fact, I would make it mandatory reading for antifa. Maybe they would spend less time in women's panties and more time taking a shower.

In fact I would make Mein Kampf mandatory reading for college students as well. Mitch McConnell and the teacher you don't like are not fascists.

I had to learn Marxist economics in college, not just the philosophy. There are some interesting ways of looking at things. The one that always stood out to me was how, to analyze any economic system, they look at who keeps the surplus. That's the power elite.

Their theory of value was batshit. Something's value is not determined by how much work one puts into producing it.

The fact that Academia can't understand why Marxism fails and leads to the destruction of Civil Rights tells me either they aren't deserving of being Academcis, or they don't care and are willing to push it for their own devices.

My humble observation of non-STEM academia is this: because they are steeped in critical theory, their main strength and the skill they hone throughout their careers is deconstruction. Construction is always more difficult than deconstruction. If your attempt at constructing an ideology or social policy theory derives from deconstructing what already exists, then you are bound to have problems. You can't base a positive set of theories around negative statements.

You see this throughout the entire leftist program. Even the identity politics center around negative identities that are defined in contrast to white heterosexual normative identity.
