Re: Preparing for Uncertainty and Self Reliance
I don't have any idea what the log materials/plans/etc cost. I was talking about that as a permanent house, not a yurt temp solution.
I was talking about the cost of temporary housing ( https://www.claytonparis.com/Homes/SRB031982AL ), which is what I understood the yurt concept to be for you.

But now you are looking for the cheapest trailers you can find and comparing that to the top of the line yurt with really nice appliances.
There is a guy who runs a homestead in Asheville and YouTubes his life. He has a friend who bought a big yurt used for about 7k. Then he spent about 25k building rooms, adding appliances and utilities, and furnishing it.
He's got a pretty big home for a total of about 35k.

Yeah, at 35K that kicks the shit out of a trailer every day of the week, bigly.
Hence my suggestion that 80-90K for a temp solution seems out of line.

I am not saying this is high living or anything, but this guy has done quite a lot with very little capital to the point of being down right admirable.
The 80-90 figure was about what I estimated they had to have spent to build that home in the video, not what I would want to do.

Some more ideas. Land on the hillsides of foothills is pretty cheap. It's actually possible to farm there with terracing.

What I was thinking is that you could combine this technique with raised beds in boxes (which also act as supports for the terraces, and using high tunnels that you cross over two or three terraces along the contour of the terrain.
Then if your rain catchment system is located at the top of the hill, you can connect drip irrigation systems to that and irrigate your beds with no energy costs (just gravity).

That is a hell of a lot of work. You’re going to need heavy machinery to get it done in your lifetime.

Re: Preparing for Uncertainty and Self Reliance
We finally got a possible hurricane headed toward NOLA. First of the season I believe. As a veteran of at least three hurricanes I'm going to list out some things you should do to prepare.
1. Stock up on alcohol. This will prove useful because when the power goes out you will be bored.
2. Get gas already. They do sell out a couple days before landfall and they take time to refuel. If you are in a pinch you absolutely can run mid grade or premium in a motor that doesn't require it. That's what I had to do last time.
3. It's not going to be very hot. What you can if it's an option is open a window.
4. You will still have cell phone coverage. If you have gas you can charge your phone and shit post on the internet. Also, keep some headphones so you can listen to music.
5. Waffle House will stay open as long as humanly possible. It acts as a community hub for first responders. Whataburger will attempt to do the same but they aren't as well prepared as Waffle House and the workers don't get tips so they will send everyone home. You may notice a long line of cars at any drive-thru that's still open during the day of the hurricane. This is because people are planning ahead and getting burgers while they still can. Prepare for a longer than usual wait time.
6. Stock up on ammo. You can use it to shoot at shit if you get bored. It also brings police around in case you need to talk to them about how drunk you are.
ETA: VERY IMPORTANT!!! DO NOT SHOOT AT SHIT IN THE WATER IT CAN POSSIBLY RICOCHET. Of course if you are just basically shooting down into a creek and nothing is around for a mile that's probably ok.
7. Park your vehicle on high ground. You can pretty much park wherever it will fit and not have to worry about getting towed. Seriously, everyone does. What you think might be fine could be flooded the next hour so as high as possible tbh
8. You can drive around in flood waters pretty much up to your doors in a truck. Done it a bunch of times. It's fine.
9. Have a boat. Boats are fun and you might be able to use them to get around and save people and stuff.
10. Bring your animals and old people inside. Seriously though if you have a relative in a retirement community bring them with you. In New Orleans there was an old folks home that got flooded. The nurses just left them behind and people drowned.
Edit: couple more tips if you are flooded
Hard wood furniture, the older the better is going to be ok. You can raise it up on blocks of wood if you want. Most furniture, like 99% of furniture in 99% of people's homes will be trashed. Even if you think it's hard wood, a lot of times the base is made of that shitty particle board. You can forget about Ikea furniture if you so much as breath on it on a muggy day.
Rip all the carpet up as soon as possible and throw that shit on the curb. It's got mold. I've only done very little flood damage work but you can fix the bulk of it yourself with a sledge hammer and a bunch of fans.
