Puritan literature to teach children about sex was more frank than most contemporary Americans would ever discuss with their children. Puritans even had a tradition of dry runs where a boy and girl would sleep in a bed together in these sacks that allowed them to fool around but not penetrate.

In the 80s, boys and girls both took birth control seriously. Casual fucking was de rigueur, but so was a rubber *and* the pill.

In HS, my best friend's gf worked at a pharmacy and would sell rubbers to us when the nosy pharmacist wasn't around. In undergrad, the condom section at the drug store just off campus was just about as big as the beer and cigarettes section. (and the age for cold beer was 18; so bends the twig and all that rot)
