Re: Intellectual Property and the Structure of Human Action
Patents in the AI world are even more egregious.
In the 2000s when I was a grad student, there were cognitive model designs and even AI algorithms that were patented. This meant that innovation along those lines were terribly locked down. You needed grant money to pay off the guy who patented the algorithms just to do research that could lead to real world applications.
That didn't help anybody but the guy who filed the patent, probably for something he researched using public funds in the first place.
You even had guys working at government labs patenting and copyrighting the products of their research that we all paid for.

Government patents have always bothered me because it's our money.Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 6:35 amPatents in the AI world are even more egregious.

In the event that anyone who reads this thread is interested, http://www.stephankinsella.com/kinsella ... y-podcast/ has some stuff worth listening to.
And here's a recent one with an actual economist that was good: https://www.bobmurphyshow.com/ep-39-ste ... acy-of-ip/

You can argue this point from your contemptible lawyer perspective all day. There is no value in that line of argumentation.
From an actual engineering and scientific research perspective -- which unlike a lawyer's self-interest actually do matter to society as a whole -- these patents are utterly poisonous.
Just focusing on the financial incentives of the people filing patents is truly myopic. The overall harm to society is immense. Patents greatly diminish innovation. Innovation, I was led to believe, was the entire point of patents, so I fail to see why we should continue supporting a legal construct that does the opposite it was intended to do.

You can "muh R&D" it all day and all night, and it won't change the economic fact that ideas are not property.
The notion that innovation only happens when the state gangsters set up a shakedown racket is so intellectually contemptible that it makes my head hurt to even think about it.

Patented Ideas are property because the Constitution says they are - just like Blackacre is property because the King says so.Fife wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 6:47 amYou can "muh R&D" it all day and all night, and it won't change the economic fact that ideas are not property.

If I had more time and beer (better yet liquor) - I would explain to you that patents are why the US overtook GB in the manufacturing game in the 1800s-1920s.
You think you know more than James and Tom?

Negatory.
Ideas are non-rivalrous. Not property. Pretending they are property means that actual, IRL property is destroyed by the state.
Muh Constitution Tho is yet another limp wiggle.
