The incident was related to the security forces attempting to arrest the Fenians, and so they opened fire.
I don't actually give a rat's ass about the reporter, if you enter the combat zone you take your chances.

The security forces of the British Crown had come to kick in Fenian doors to round up Fenian guns.
Bear in mind that the Fenians are republicans.
They view the British Crown exactly as Americans do.
When the British Crown comes in the middle of the night to grab their guns, the Fenians fight back.
If some ambulance chasing reporter gets caught in the crossfire, too bad, so sad.
