My wife, Gwynne, and I really enjoy experiencing Easter Sunday in a Catholic country, especially in the more rural cities big enough for a stone church but that still use mud bricks for construction. An example is Easter Sunday in Cajamarca, Peru, where the churches are overflowing but the souvenir shops are still open. Gwynne & I explored the city center at night, lured by a chapel high on a hillside clearly visible from our hotel room due to the spot lights. We had to climb many flights of circular steps but it was well worth the view, though we did have to share the tranquility with pack of stray dogs.

On the way back down, we went into a pizza shop that looked just like home except they sold cheap Peruvian wine that was so sweet it made your teeth hurt, and sausage pizza that was nothing like home. We also stopped to buy a Peruvian-made sweater-vest for me. The shop-owner said it was made of alpaca fur but what he probably meant was that it had a rough image of an alpaca woven into it. Gwynne said now no one can tell me from the locals.
