Five minutes in, and that audience already make me lose hope. They're treating it like it's a sports event, my team versus your team, by their hooting and cheering.

Is this where we're at now? No longer listening to arguments, understanding one another, but rather seeing everything as an ideological battle?

No matter what side one is on, I'd expect them to actually listen to arguments, and understand them, rather than cheering like it's a football match.

It's not about being convinced. It's about understanding what the other guy means. Even if he's wrong, there's no harm in gaining an understanding of why he's wrong.

No matter what side one is on, I'd expect them to actually listen to arguments, and understand them, rather than cheering like it's a football match.

You expect too much. A great percentage of US voters are so dug in that it really is a us vs. them mentality.

I've mostly given up trying to have honest debates with those with a different ideology. There are still good debates to be had within a certain scope, but trying to have meaningful, civil discussions about say, Trump between people who support and oppose him are pretty much nothing more than shouting matches.
