my favorite scene was at the beginning when bran said "we don't have time for this, the night king has broken through the wall and is moving south," before proceeding to watch an hour of everyone casually having fan-service reunions tying up loose plot threads between characters. even in the previews for the next episode, it looks like tormund is back at winterfell before the night king. i'm calling bullshit, tormund should have died when that fucking wall came down, and the first episode should have began with the night king storming winterfell and killing everyone

third episode is supposedly when the battle starts, i bet i could skip the 2nd and still be reasonably caught up for episode 3

Given the context, this was an extremely slow episode. No sense of urgency whatsoever. The dudes at Castle Black should have been scrambling their asses off.

It was fun when Sansa said, "did you bring food for all these troops?" She never did get an answer.

I have no issues that it was an episode that re-united characters. It helps set the tone of a season like this. My issue was with the pace. They should have accomplished a lot more.

Jon's first dragon ride took too much time.

In terms of all other episodes, this may have been the most boring, for me, even though there were several satisfactory reunions. I was expecting more in the way of preparations. All I saw were dragon glass weapons being created and not much else. No strategy talk.

How the hell can they have a filler episode or two in a simple six episode season ? And most aren't even longer than an hour. This is madness. So what we have here is episodes 3 & 4 will be the major battle and episode 5 will be some revenge killings and episode 6 will be looking at the Carnage and projecting into the future a bit of how it will be. Great sounds wonderful. I'm sure interesting characters like Jamie , Hound, and Bronn will be wasted .

It will be rich to see Khaleesi weave her way through being angry with Jamie for killing her murderous dad and at the same time persuade Jon not to bother her over touching Sam's kindred .

I couldn't believe that it got more boring as the hour went on. I have no idea what they were thinking with this episode. I guess they promised the fans six episodes, but they didn't have six episodes worth of material.

The final battle is supposed to be the longest continuous battle scene in film history. It's longer than LoTRs final battle, which was 40 minutes. They (Benioff/Weiss) said they won't say it's the longest with authority, as there may have been a longer battle in some really old movies, that nobody has remembered.

The final battle took 11 weeks to film. They were in the middle of nowhere and were only working nights (sundown-sun up.) They were all miserable throughout the entire process. They have t-shirts that say, “We Survived The Long Night”

And you wonder why I doubted this shows ability to nail the landing? Shit like this is why.

Yep. Note to future shows. What the fans want is 99 times out of 100 shit. Don't let a twitter hashtag become your screenplay unless you want to become Game of Trisomy.

If you're going to wrap it up, you need to tie up the loose ends. Some of these reunions were more important than others. Arya and Jon was important, they hadn't seen each other since like S01E02! And they were the tightest of all the Stark brood. Hound and Arya not so important, but fun. "I robbed you first".

My daughter and I enjoyed the episode, frequently stopping it and discussing various points. The one thing we didn't see coming was the Dany/Sam confrontation, and it's putting Sam as the trusted adviser telling Jon he should be king. But he don't know Jon is banging her. Awkward.

You guys are too impatient. Some here criticize it for wanting to be one long movie, but that is explicitly what Benioff and Weiss said they're doing. Movies take different pacing than episodic TV. It's a romance, not a series of one night stands.
