It has spawned some great movies for sure. One of the many things I misunderstood about the Vietnam war was the battles. In most Vietnam movies, you have these moments of sheer quiet and boredom, and then you get sneak attacked by the gooks. Purely guerrilla. I read that the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong actually did fight a lot of huge conventional battles with the Americans. Kind of like that scene at the end of Platoon, or the Tet scene in FMJ. To be honest, based on the asymetrical weaponry and air support, I would imagine most of these battles were suicide missions for the Vietnamese. Which Vietnam movie is the most realistic depiction of the conflict?


I have seen a few in my day, and my favorites are:

Apocalypse Now
Platoon
The Odd Angry Shot
Full Metal Jacket

following those are a bunch of BS ones like We Were Soldiers, or Bodies of War

Odd Angry shot was great, and aside from like 2 scenes, made the war seem really really fun. Those guys were doing all kinds of funny shit like scorpion fighting and building wanking machines for the Chaplain. Looked like some real stand up guys you'd want in your foxhole. Australians seem pretty awesome from how I've seen them depicted in media.

I always liked Odd Angry Shot of course, Aussie SAS aesthetic. Low budget, but tactically sound.

That's what the Aussies are like. Certainly in the Special Air Service Regiment they are.

Is it true the VC and North Vietnamese were more scared of the Aussies than the Americans? One of my professors told us this, and said it was because the Australian servicemen were very familiar with the bush.
