Are Putin and his cronies actually worried about Communism taking hold in Russia again? From my reading about the Soviet Union, that belief system never had any popularity among the population during any period of time. The fact that a former KGB agent has hosted Orthodox ceremonies tells me that communism will not make a repeat in Russia for a very long time.


That being said, it does seem like Russians now revere Stalin. To be honest, they don't seem too bent out of shape about all the gulags, purges and what have you. I don't get their culture, but I guess they are master whitewashers. Or maybe they like the strongmen. Maybe they just want to forget all that shit.

Man, I'm not trying to be obtuse here. I genuinely don't know that much about current Russia. But why is this the case? The average Russian urbanite hated the Soviet Union. And thats in the cities. If you were a peasant in the countryside, that hate was magnified by 1000. Bribery, corruption, alcoholism, and cynicism are things Russians lead the Northern Hemisphere in during the 20th century. Who would want it back? Why would anyone in charge want to fuck up the status quo where the right people make billions to go back to being purged and sent to Kolyma? What am I missing?
