It was the other way round, the American Revolution incited the French Revolution, in two ways, one was obviously inspiration, Bourbon assisted the Americans to overthrow their Crown, showing that it was in fact viable to do so, and secondarily, had also spent so much money fighting the British, that they had essentially gone broke doing it.

I should really read a bit more about that period, It's a bit of a gap in my knowledge.

What was the British motivation for that move? Control of North America?

The British weren't in control of it, the Ohio Company inciting the French and Indian War in order to ultimately eject the French from the Ohio Valley so that the Americans could have it for themselves, is the first volley, of the Americans revolution against their own Crown. They were off the reservation, their interests had begun to diverge sharply from the status quo, so they did something about it; with crisis comes opportunity.
