Do you buy all the scientists during the Cold War that said if about 100 hydrogen bombs were detonated that the atmosphere would fill with ash and block out sunlight killing all life on Earth? Is that viable, or an earlier version of Al Gore?
There would be a Nuclear Winter effect, but it's overstated, wouldn't be an extinction event.
Plants wouldn't be fucked right? Just animals with bones, because the radiation binds to the calcium? My dad used to watch those Cold War nuclear fallout PSAs/docs as a kid, and he said they always talked about Strontium 90 or whatever.
The Northern Hemisphere would be pretty bad in the event of an all out countervalue exchange.

Ciudad del Este on the Parana in Paraguay however, would become a new Manhattan.

I think it would be kind of cool if the plants did all survive the nuke exchange, and the radiation actually made them sentient and powerful kind of like godzilla, and they made their own complex society and civilization. In this society, they'd eat whatever people were left and actually cultivate them as a sort of agriculture.

Bear in mind, big thing to note; this is not 1983

There are nowhere near as many nukes in play now.

The war would be vastly smaller than it would have been in the 1980's

How many less nukes are there? Also, how often do you think countries lie about the number of nukes they have? It seems like telling the world how many nukes you have is a national security threat. Israel doesn't, and that strategy has served them well over the years.

In 1983 you were looking at 25,000 or so nukes going off, many of them massive City Killers.

Now you are looking at more like 2,500, most of them small tactical yield counterforce weapons.

Why the cut backs? That's not cool. If America goes down, I want everyone else to as well. I don't want Paraguay or wherever to be top dog. Its us or nobody.

America will survive the thermonuclear war, it wouldn't be the end of America, although you could lose the war, lose your Hegenomy that is.

Probably going to suffer something like a hundred million killed.

It's not existential tho, just the Eastern Front on steroids.

Not if we take everybody else out. Not that I'd want to live after a major nuclear exchange anyway. I'd be all deformed, missing my teeth and radiation sick as a mangy dog. Or I'd not die from the radiation and starve to death. I'd rather just get fried instantly.

There are not enough nukes to do that and, even if so, the calculus of nuclear war dictates that you go 100% against your opponent in an attempt to cripple his ability to launch against you and to mobilize for conventional war afterward.

Thus why I say you should be building a Supercounterforce next generation post-MAD deterrent.

It's both a better deterrent, and should deterrence fail, the Supercounterforce ensures that America wins with comparatively light casualties.
