In the end, my Da died in his sleep.
Because the actual five minutes where the machines clocked him out, he was unconscious.
It's not that bad. It's over pretty quick. You're probably going to be asleep when you cross the river.
Yeah, I don't think it is the actually crossing that is the problem. Although, my wife's mother waited for my wife to tell her it was ok to let go and then she did.
The reckoning seems to be when that point of no return is realized even though we are all living that point every day. Death of hope, maybe?

HA!
Mine was more of a Midwestern workhorse. All business and production. No time for frivolous satire.
Hey Day cracks me up though.

My Da would have liked you too.
Anybody who was up for a party, and not overly sensitive.
My Da was a troll, he loved to get people going.

At my Da's funeral, all these broads showed up, women he had worked with over the years.
Swear ta Gad, my Da had fucked every one of them.
My Da was a party animal in the classical sense.

Mine was "Straight Edge." Teetotaler, married and faithful from age of 19.
Mom didn't even extend an invite to his work family to witness him getting stowed away in the wall. Dad's motto was that he only worked a half day meaning 12 hours. He spent more time with his work peeps than he ever did with the rest of the family except me because I worked for him/with him for about 18 years.

I'm more conservative than my father, I'm not a teetotaler by any means, but I'm a one woman kind of guy.
But I am the Gen X Latchkey Kid. Broken home at ten years old, stability is valuable to me.
My Da was a reefer smoking Beatnik constrained by the 1950's social conservatism, so he was dissident to that.

Funny story. On one occasion, he needed to have some morphine, the nurse came in and slammed him with two syringes full of morphine one right after the other. Dad grabbed the head rail on his trip to the moon. I thought he was a goner right there, eyes straight to the back of his head. I even called out to him. After he got out there in space he looked at me and said "That was rude. She is supposed to go slower."
"Yeah Dad, she was. How was the blastoff though?" Reminded me of the Pulp Fiction scene.
