Bullshit.
British security measures have foiled dozens of terrorist plots.
Both Islamic and far-right plots have been stopped by security forces.
One far-right terrorist organisation (responsible for the Jo Cox murder) was banned and its members arrested. This certainly prevented further attacks.

I think you overestimate how much security services actually can do to protect people against this sort of thing. Norway did pretty much nothing after 2011, and we still haven't got another terror attack. But if we did go fully draconian, people would believe that's the reason we haven't had any new terror attacks.

Same thing with New Zealand. It's a safe country. They'd do fine with doing absolutely nothing at all. But if they do something, they can attribute that something as the reason it's "safer".

Guns might get harder to get hold off for some terrorists though. Sad thing is, that will only make the targets softer. Can't attack a mosque filled with adults with knifes, so they'll go for kindergartens instead.
Politicians with armed guards = go for citizens instead
can't get guns = go for people who can't defend themselves even in numbers

To me, it looks like the best solution would be making everyone equally soft targets, if we're not supposed to have guns for self protection anyway.
