The issue, as always, is the nukes. The slightest change in the situation, in Kashmir or somewhere else, threatens to tip the local balance of terror, so both sides are ever vigilant about the other side making the slightest gains. Classic cold war.

Inclusive to that of course, is putting the lie to the old chestnut "democracies never go to war with each other".
This being two democracies threatening to nuke each other on a hair trigger.
The Cold War was never about ideology.

Agreed. Total war begins with the democratizing of war. Prior to, only professionals fought wars.
This is why the Falklands Islands War was so fascinating.
Really the only all professional war to be fought in over a century.
A high tech 18th Century War. Gentleman's war with jet fighters.

We should ask the 16-, 17-, and 18th century Europeans about this...Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2019 3:22 pmDemocracies are the greatest force for creating war humanity ever conceived.

In the 16th, 17th and 18th centures, wars were not fought amongst the people, professional armies fought wars on tiny fields of battle, the masses were largely unaffected, in fact they would often spectate the battles like sporting events.
This was in fact the case until the American Civil War, where democratized industrial total war was born.
The Greeks invented decisive warfare, which is let's all meet in a field and settle this so we can go back to the farms after.
America invents democratic war, war for a cause which cannot be resolved other than by total annihilation.
The ultimate expression of which, is of course the hydrogen bomb.
