As a kid, I love Baa Baa Blacksheep



There's a character that deserves to redone for a movie. Seventies TV was not big enough for Pappy Boyington.

I know Magnum PI was a favorite show of mine... and later I found him whiny and annoying when I watched the show again out of nostalgia.

I know exactly what you mean, happens to me frequently if I watch something from back when. I loved Northern Exposure, but couldn't stand the doctor character on recent rewatch. I know he was supposed to be obnoxious, but not unwatchable! Dramas can be bad, but I think most old sitcoms are worse. It's sad, I LOVED Get Smart!

The wife and I are watching the Waltons. We were both too young for the early years of the show. It stands up very well, and quite refreshing, a real change of pace from anything you will see today. The show is about family and values and it doesn't get preachy about it either. The moral and Ethical lessons aren't corny like Leave it to Beaver or the Brady Bunch. I really can't recommend it enough.

The parents and grandparents are just so strong, though fallable that they create an outstanding base for the show. The kids really act like kids too.

Have you read his book? Harrowing times in a POW camp were left out of the show. Somebody mentioned him recently in another thread as a USAF pilot, I didn't want to nerdcrap the thread by pointing out he was a Marine.

Another amazing little known book is The Ragged Rugged Warriors, by Martin Caiden. Its all about the early air war in the Pacific before new planes could make it to the theater, and it was barfight in the air. My folks were acquaintances of Caiden, and we had a lot of his books around. Several were made into movies & TV shows, including Marooned and The 6 million Dollar Man.

Ugh. I wanted to rewatch it but I'm afraid the same thing will happen to me. Maybe its better in my memories

I read a book on him as a yute. Probably one of the Bantam war novels, 150 pages, wham bam, type thing. Just enough to know that he was a huge character that really can only exist and thrive in time of war. In peace time he'd just be in jail. He's from Pac-NW, so everyone knows a little about him. Though I've never seen it written, I'm pretty sure he's part injun. He acted like a Half-Breed. Definitely a lot of material there, and it would suit modern movie or even mini-series very well. The problem is that the audience is probably not around for an extend telling of history.

I thought Magnum held up pretty well. Personally, I like episodic story telling. I'm worn out on the extended seasons long dramatic story lines. The characters in Magnum PI are just fantastic. Higgins and Magnum playing off each other is outstanding.

Yes, that was great, and a multi-part story IIRC. Imagine if they gave it the Premium TV treatment with long arcs? I have no idea if the reboot does that, I won't disgrace myself by watching it.

Has anybody been watching Berlin Station or Condor? There's a mini boom in good old fashioned spy stories that are like the best parts of Homeland without the quivering chinned crazy woman.
