You ever read any John M Harrison?Smitty-48 wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2019 1:00 pmI honestly envy you, I wish I could read them all again for the first time, Reynolds has a new Revelation Space Trilogy, but, I read them them faster than he can write them, so I'm jonesin again already.California wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2019 12:57 pmI read one Alastair Reynolds book, I forget which one but I enjoyed itSmitty-48 wrote: Sun Mar 03, 2019 3:53 pm Alastair Reynolds is where hard sci fi and space opera meet, space opera within the laws of physics.
Revelation Space ftw.
I also enjoy Bill Gibson still, Cyperpunk 2.0 ftw
I think thats' where I"m going to go on my next sci-fi kick
Alastair Reynolds; Demarchists, Conjoiners, Ultras, and their Lighthugger's ftw.
I highly recommend the audiobooks by the way, many are on youtube, all narrated by John Lee, who is one of the best.

No. I very rarely add anyone new to the rotation, because I find most SF to be unreadable crap actually.heydaralon wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2019 1:25 pmYou ever read any John M Harrison?Smitty-48 wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2019 1:00 pmI honestly envy you, I wish I could read them all again for the first time, Reynolds has a new Revelation Space Trilogy, but, I read them them faster than he can write them, so I'm jonesin again already.California wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2019 12:57 pm

Old argument, but you really need to read Pournelle's CoDominium series: human to human infantry action on the ground on distant colony planets in brigade strength with weapons no different from our own. You'd love it. Only really SF portion is FTL. Because it's 'low budget' actions there's not even much air and armor involved.Smitty-48 wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2019 1:32 pm No. I very rarely add anyone new to the rotation, because I find most SF to be unreadable crap actually.

Pournell's books are every bit as good. Heinlein himself fucking loved them. They were good friends.

You'd also love the fact that he thinks hereditary aristocracy is the best form of government. The whole arc of the series is the Terran armed forces decide to abandon Earth as irrecoverably corrupt and establish a space empire based elsewhere.
My favorite detail in the books is the notion that free food is part of the "minimum income" welfare state, but it's all dosed with contraceptives. If you wanna breed, you need to be able to buy your own food.

Bet plenty would do it cheaper than that. I mean, you can get someone hit for the cost of a car. Be fun to set up a reverse auction and see how low they'd go.GloryofGreece wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2019 4:05 pm Haha. Reminds me of offering the proles a new car if they willingly get fixed.
