My cousin visited South East Asia a few years back. He said Cambodians, Laotians, and Thais were cool with the tourists, but Vietnamese people seemed sterner and less welcoming. Idk if that is generally the case, or if it is their culture generally, or the bad blood from the war.

The OSS actually helped them during WW2, which is one of the reasons the Vietnamese were so surprised that we didn't have their back after the War ended. In so much as I agree with you that the communist situation wasn't monolithic (cambodia vs Vietnam, Russia vs China, China vs Vietnam etc), the Vietnamese were still commies so fuck em.
