Most important thing for tanks now, is active protection, Abrams is getting Rafael Trophy.

It's like a big shotgun round, directional frag, hail of pellets, radar detects the incoming round, then it fires a countermeasure at it to knock it down before it hits, then a little robot arm loads another countermeasure in the launcher.

I heard that's basically our anti missle defense for ships. They call it PHALYNX iirc. Never really been tested except in the gulf war but there, it didn't seem to work so well based on what I heard. I think it's kind of hype. Like Israel's iron dome.

There's another Isreali one called Iron Fist which launches a grenade which explodes to intercept.
The best one is the German AMAP-ADS which is like a hybrid between active and reactive, it's crazy how that one works, like a shaped charge, except the computer can aim it somehow, I'm not even sure how it does it.

No. These ADS are tested, they drag a tank through a hail of live fire everything, all at once, to make sure the thing works.TheReal_ND wrote: ↑Thu Feb 28, 2019 10:13 pmI heard that's basically our anti missle defense for ships. They line up RPG, ATGW, APFSDS, what have you, like one long linear ambush, then they tow the tank into it with the ADS on.

So in theory, what you are saying, is that a molotov on the windshield is still the best way to kill tanks. Outside of IED's I guess. It's actually amazing how they work, even the Russian ones, the Ukrainians complain that the Russian tanks seem to have an invisible force shield. That's ARENA retrofitted onto T-72.

Meanwhile the Turks went into Syria without ADS, and they got cut to pieces, NATO Leopard 2's with their turrets flying into the sky, because the insurgents had TOW missiles.
