Which brings me back to this Green New Deal idea..

Why not just spend that money building charging stations across the United States at every interstate rest stop, and working with Tesla to produce a model that has good quality but without the bells and whistles?

Cities are where these things come into play, and urban drivers likely only need charging stations at rest stops. Imagine being able to drive from New York to LA without ever leaving the interstate system.

We don't live in a tiny European country. Everything is spread out far and wide. Our transportation solutions need to be based on individual vehicles outside the densest portions of the large cities, and inside the cities maybe focus on mass transit like monorails, which run on electricity.

To power the cars and mass transit, built thorium nuclear power plants.

Wouldn't that accomplish what everybody wants?
Moore Furniture has a free charging station.
That's really cool.

How much did it cost to install?

Not really sure. It was my uncles pet project.

Couldn’t be too bad or it wouldn’t have been done.

Nick, I'm coming to WA on my electric bike; I'll give you a fifth of TN whiskey for a charge at the store. How far east from the store to the nearest Whole Foods?

The point is not that he created a tunnel that is going to fix all of LA's traffic. That's going to take way more effort than a prototype tunnel. The point is that some people have the ability and drive to get things done and some don't. A party whose function has shifted to pointing out oppression everywhere is incapable of meeting the infrastructure demands of our cities.
no, the point is that it's a stupid idea. Elon didn't invent it, it's just a tunnel, it wasn't dug any cheaper than any other tunnel it's size, one accident and it turns into a disaster, putting elevators all over to get cars into & out of it would be incredibly expensive and ongoing maintenance would be ridiculous, besides being slow to get cars in/out of the tunnel system. If it was privately owned it'd be bankrupt before it got finished, publicly owned it'd be a financial boondoggle that would wind up being miles of worthless tunneling at taxpayer expense before being abandoned.

Calling it a "hypertunnel" is just marketing, it's a stupid idea. His "hypertube" is the same, 100y/o idea that was a bad idea then and a bad idea now, dangerously unsafe waste of money. If you want high speed transport you ditch individual vehicles and build high speed trains and fly planes - and hint, SST planes were essentially a financial failure - accelleration/speed means energy expense to get them there, in general faster/more-powerful means energy guzzling and high cost no matter what the energy source.

Maybe people just need to slow the fuck down - you don't need that shit from Amazon in 2 days, you don't need to respond to that tweet/post in under a minute, the world isn't gonna fall apart if it takes you 5 minutes longer to get to the store. People used to understand that and plan appropriately.

Electric cars are the answer, people can bitch and moan about them not being ready yet but they are here to stay.
Any rare and therefore expensive metals used in the batteries will get recycled and charge points will start appearing all over the place.
20 years time nearly everyone will be in electric cars and the internal combustion engine will be banned from most cities and large towns.
Fight it all you like naysayers but it's coming and there's nothing you can do about it.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

The main ingredients in the batteries are nickel, cobalt, and lithium. Recycling can be done the same way we have recycling laws for tires and old fashion car batteries.

Electric will eventually replace most domestic automobiles eventually. There's not really a need to legislate shit either. It's just going to happen because it will become more economical.

That said, I do think there is a place for letting auto companies reproduce their older 1950s and 1960s era vehicles with minimal updates for safety. Just limit those vehicles from being used on high-speed interstates. An old 1960s Ford truck today coming off the line could probably be sold around 10 to 15 grand tops, brand new. That opens up transportation to rural people without a lot of costs that come with electric cars.
