A vicious street brawl between rival “yellow vest” factions has highlighted bitter divisions among the anti-government protesters as the speaker of the National Assembly warned of a culture of violence engulfing French politics.

Dozens of far Right supporters and ultra-Leftists taking part in yellow vest protests fought with fists, rocks and sticks in the eastern city of Lyon on Saturday night.

The violence was seen as further evidence of widening splits in the leaderless grassroots movement. It began in protest at fuel prices but has since widened into a more general revolt against a political class seen as out of touch with common people. The protesters are united only in their opposition to President Emmanuel Macron and often make radically different demands.

There is a lot of concern about that.
I just watched a Panorama program on the subject tonight.
The far right protests here are still pretty small but as we saw with the James Goddard case recently they are trying to co-opt the Brexit issue and jump on the Yellow Vest bandwagon.
Currently, the issue they are trying to make a cause célèbre is an incident where a driver left the road and hit 3 guys on the pavement killing them all.
Despite the fact that the driver was convicted of dangerous driving, was driving for some distance at over 70 mph in a 30, had consumed cannabis and was drunk (well over the limit) they are trying to say this was an Islamic terrorist attack covered up by the authorities. The driver was Hindu BTW and has made multiple efforts to apologise to the families from prison where he he serving 10 years.
This is the thing about conspiracy theories, those who want to believe in them are easily convinced and can't be dissuaded by the facts.
