Sort of and no. Both parties are and have always been coalitions. In the late 60's the racist Dixiecrats started leaving the party for the GOP after they felt betrayed by LBJ and the civil rights movement and lured by Nixon's "Southern Strategy". LBJ famously predicted this. As the GOP became more racist, blacks left it for the Democrats. Does this mean the "parties flipped"? Not really, just coalitions shifting, other components of both parties stayed the same.

The Dixiecrats created the KKK. And the GOP freed the slaves. Shit changes.
