Re: Fake News
The solution to the problem is realizing that "journalism" is as dishonest a term as "fact checker".

Re: Fake News
You believe that Trump is more honest then Bob Woodward. Bob Woodward is what some people consider our greatest journalist. Right now, as far as I figure, Woodward is publishing books on President's lives and saying, "if what I'm publishing is false, sue me." He does all of his reporting on the record with anonymous sources, then makes money off of the books he sells.Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Mon Feb 04, 2019 8:47 amThe solution to the problem is realizing that "journalism" is as dishonest a term as "fact checker".

Bob Woodward is a giant fraud, dude. He makes shit up all the time. Stop being so credulous and stop praising these fucking people. They have nothing but contempt for NPCs like you.jediuser598 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 04, 2019 9:05 amYou believe that Trump is more honest then Bob Woodward. Re: Fake News
Witness the two extremes - Journalists are all liars, they can't report facts, nothing they write is worth anything / Journalists are a critical aspect of democracy, and democracy needs them to survive.
Truth, as usual, dwells in the middle.

If the idea of reporting facts is dishonest and impossible then so is the idea of science and history.
(I’ve met students from university that believe this)
Here’s the thing: If you believe in such a thing as truth, which your argument implies, then it is a given that one may be nearer or less near to it.
Our rationality is the attempt to get near to it. That humans are fallible is not a new revelation nor a meaningful indictment against the pursuit of truth.

I said: the idea that "journalists" report facts and objective truth with the intent of providing you with all the information is a fraudulent idea.
Everybody has an agenda. Journalists are trying to persuade and manipulate no differently than anybody else. What makes it truly dishonest is how they write in a style that is supposed to signal that they are objective arbiters of what really is going on. NO SUCH THING EXISTS IN THIS WORLD.
It's all persuasian. It's like when a student gets assigned to write a paper on something like gun control. The student is going to choose data and examples that supports his thesis, while likely ignoring or downplaying counter-evidence. This happens everywhere. It even happens in hard sciences, which is why we have a process of verification, duplication, and hostile papers written by specialists who's primary role os finding flaws in experimental designs and statistics. There also exists LOTS of cases of massaged data and sometimes outright fraud.
Journalism is not only no different but much, much worse.

Re: Fake News
I represented your idea so damn accurately that you just repeated the conclusion I inferred from it.
Your idea isn’t new, most rational people are aware words handed down from other humans is not the word of God.
There is something called justified belief that we round up to facts and truth, and it’s been working quite well to get us to the moon, understand the cycles of history and know what’s happening in our world.
That it’s not perfect is both obvious and acceptable because it brings us nearer to the truth.
