Re: Socialism
Brewster - you prepared to use force to take 70% of people's income? Fuck it- Brewster doesn't have to get hand dirty - Congress and the DoD will do the dirty work for Comrade Brewster. All Brewster has to do is vote for tyranny my the majority...

Re: Socialism
The Irish Potato famine happened as a combination of potato blight (and they were only growing one kind of potato so were susceptible to complete crop failure) with landlords owning most of the arable land and exporting most of the food to England where market prices were higher.
It was definitely partly a failure of not containing capitalism. The pursuit of profit does not always end in good outcomes. People who believe that worship money.

Re: Socialism
You can't be honest about anything. No one has proposed taking 70% of ANYONE'S income! The proposal was 70% of income over some millions of dollars, which you sure ain't in that bracket. And for those who can do math, that means No One would pay 70%, since they pay less on what's below that bracket. This is nothing but populist fear-mongering and ignorance spreading.
As is much of the talking points here. You sound simply stupid when you make everything B&W. Saying everything economically left is Marxist is as stupid as saying everything economically right from American capitalism to Russian kleptocracy to the Libertarian Paradise some wish for is exactly the same. When you scorch the earth of the middle ground, no wonder no one can meet there.

Again, since this seems to be baffling more than one poster in this thread:
Human global population requires X calories to survive.
Natural plant disease reduces calories to X-potatoes.
Cause of death is starvation (caloric deprivation) due to potatoes significantly reducing their contribution to the global calorie pool.
Not caused by capitalism, no matter how desperately the theocrats and communist apologists wish it were so.

What is the pathology of continuing to double down when told you need to read up on a subject? You don't know what you're talking about.DBTrek wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 3:17 pmAgain, since this seems to be baffling more than one poster in this thread:

When the crops began to fail in 1845, as a result of P. infestans infection, Irish leaders in Dublin petitioned Queen Victoria and Parliament to act—and, initially, they did, repealing the so-called “Corn Laws” and their tariffs on grain, which made food such as corn and bread prohibitively expensive.
Still, these changes failed to offset the growing problem of the potato blight. With many tenant farmers unable to produce sufficient food for their own consumption, and the costs of other supplies rising, thousands died from starvation, and hundreds of thousands more from disease caused by malnutrition.
Complicating matters further, historians have since concluded, was that Ireland continued to export large quantities of food, primarily to Great Britain, during the blight. In cases such as livestock and butter, research suggests that exports may have actually increased during the Potato Famine.
In 1847 alone, records indicate that commodities such as peas, beans, rabbits, fish and honey continued to be exported from Ireland, even as the Great Hunger ravaged the countryside.

Re: Socialism
It was literally a product of capitalism. Ireland produced enough food to feed those people. Instead the food was exported to England because that was more profitable. A million people died as a result.DBTrek wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 3:17 pmAgain, since this seems to be baffling more than one poster in this thread:

Re: Socialism
Brewster cites his source which does not contradict a single thing I’ve said, but his eyes see “capitalism killed all the potatoes leading to mass starvation”.
He doesn’t see “P. infestans killed all the potatoes”, which his source readily admits. He sees “something something potatoes AND FOOD WAS EXPORTED THEREFORE EVIL CAPITALISM IS AKIN TO STALINISM”
Seriously, this is a prime example of the dangers of low-info voters. We should be glad that the pseudo-Marxists got to Brewster before radical Islam did I suppose. He’s a prime example of A-grade suicide bomber material. He cannot read his own sources. He cannot think his own thoughts. All he can do is view the world through his ideological prism and act out.
This is why we can’t have nice things.

Re: Socialism
How many sources saying the English took a blight and created a famine would it take? Or has ideology simply made you impervious?
Here's the timeline:
*Ireland was a net exporter of food and could feed it's people
*Ireland has a blight, which cuts food production below surplus levels, yet English Capitalist landlords continue to export food in the same, if not greater amounts
*Famine

Re: Socialism
Ireland grew enough food to sustain the lives of their people and a significant portion of English people. Famine killed the potato supply. So now someone is going to starve, either in Ireland or England. The people in Ireland starved. Cause: potato blight.Speaker to Animals wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 3:27 pm
