Standard IT isn’t highly educated. Most are useful idiots.

What you are mistaking IT are not. This is a common misconception. Programmers aren’t IT.

Most people who are in IT can do it with nothing more than a high-school degree, they are Help Desk, Desktop Support, and Networking.

Programmers are IS, not IT, and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know the difference, and shouldn't open their mouths, because it's better to remain silent and expected to be an idiot than to open one's mouth and prove to be.

The point is that most people that say IT, have no idea what it really means, and if people say that you need to be highly educated to do IT, they don't know what the fuck they are talking about.
I have been working in IT/IS/MIS/IMS for over 20 years. All of those acronyms are interchangeable. Our department, which includes PC techs, help desk, programmers, project managers, BIDW, etc.. are all under the same name. At one time we were all IS. The we were all IMS. Now we are all IT. It's been that way at every place I've ever worked.

You better check your attitude about this topic.

I always wondered if those IS programmers have a nice life. The pay is shit compared to software engineering, but the importance of your code is somewhere between a college project and real software engineering. Probably few code reviews and almost no process hell. Testing is likely limited to rudimentary systems and integration testing. If even that.

I’ve got you by over a decade. I’ll check my attitude when people stop changing what IT means.

I’ve eorked my way up to a Director of IT/Infrastructure.

IT does not need programming knowledge, IS does.

You do not need a bachelors of science to fix a computer, to fix a network, to fix anything hardware-based. You do not need programming to do that either, you do not need to know PHP,, or anything else.

You do need to know how to interact with people, you do need to understand how a down computer affects the overall environment, you do need to have social skills. None of those require a bachelors, or any certifications whatsoever.

Certifications are away for a company to get rich, that is it if you can’t figure out how to do something by reading a book, or having somebody teach you While on the job then you want to good tech you’re a good parrot.

And I will not check my attitude For one simple reason, the idiots they are hiring with the certifications can’t figure out how to fix things. I have a better chance of having my wife do it and she’s not technically literate, I have a better chance of teaching her how to do something right there somebody with a certification.

IT/ for one simple reason, the idiots they are hiring with the certifications can’t figure out how to fix things. I have a better chance of having my wife do it and she’s not technically literate, I have a better chance of teaching her how to do something right there somebody with a certification.

IT/IS, and all of the bullshit acronyms are there for companies to get rich once you realize that you get your head out of your ass and come back to the real world because most of us who have been in the field for over 30 years don’t give a damn about certifications we care about people with personality and we care about people with real life experience you could show me a certification walls with that you’ve completed and out hire the guy off the street because he has a better personality than anybody with a certification.

It is very rare to find anybody who is knowledgeable who is sociable and right now we need more sociability in the IT world then we do Education.

Since you won't check your attitude at least check your blood pressure. After that last post I'd say it's running a little high.

I'm not disagreeing with you on certifications and how real world work and self-learning beats getting a certification. My point was that most companies don't segregate IT/IS/MIS/IMS. They are all under one main department. The individual areas are called help desk, field services, BIDW, etc.. but they are all under the same IT/IS name.

Used to be that IT related to information technology (hardware), and IS related to information systems (software), both in the context of business applications.

Core products the corporation actually sells falls under various kinds of engineering. I needed IT/IS monkeys to setup my workstation, keep our servers up, and service my email, etc. Nobody in IT would be able to write load balancing software in a real time packet data routing system, for instance. But neither do I enjoy administering unix and linux systems.

It gets blurry, though, because within engineering projects you can also have tools developers that are not working on the core products, but are developing tools that engineers use to write code for core products. It's engineering and not IS, but it's not really engineering in the same sense because there exists little process involved and very little testing. Tool development is a cool, lower-stress environment as well.

FYI, I'm talking about companies that are not in the business of software engineering. Hospitals, manufacturing, insurance. Those kinds of companies make no distinction between IS and IT. The individual jobs are differentiated, but everyone from help desk to systems analysts are under the same IS/IT designation.

Every time I cert my way into a significant pay increase I sure to shed a tear for those poor, poor, self-taught geniuses living paycheck to paycheck.

Lulz.

(Cert envy is the new college envy. Used to be a college degree was just a piece of paper someone bought that didn't mean shit. Now it's certs. Truth is, street-geniuses ain't all that smart, but they are hella loud on the internet).

My blood pressure is fine, it’s low if anything.

Just because companies don’t differentiate the difference doesn’t they are right.

And just because they are under a single department, it doesn’t mean that everyone has to have the same skill set.

On top of that, the people who were here on the H1B visa was low end IT work, not the ones requiring a doctorates to run a Nuclear power plant, or working on Fission. Which is what the H1B visas were meant for originally.

To take the best and brightest of those attempting to come in to better our country, not to flood the maket and deflate wages of the middle class.

I honestly don't care one way or the other if people choose to learn on their own or get a cert. Personally, I would choose someone with direct experience and no cert over someone with a cert and no experience, everything else being equal. I usually learn on the job over getting certs, but that's my personal choice. TC is the one calling anyone who doesn't see things his was as idiots and don't know what the fuck they are talking about.
