Looks like the closest Russian government came to commemorating the centenary of the revolution: An event marking the always more popular commemoration of WW2 fighting that is tangentially related to the revolution. Wouldn't want to glorify people rising up against the government.

They do not understand that scientific statements must always be challenged, because Science is not about ‘consensus’; ideology is.

If anyone is interested in a comprehensive, readable account of the USSR from 1917 to the 80's, they should check out Utopia in Power. This book is amazing, and it dispels all the myths around Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, WW2 etc. Misery upon misery is documented in this book. If anything, I'll bet his numbers are lower than the real death count, due to the fact that more archives have been opened since he wrote it. Great fucking book for anyone interested.

Anne Applebaum discussed some of this in Gulag. She concluded most Russians don't give a shit about Stalin's crimes. They want to move on I guess. However, a large number of them revere him. I don't give a shit if Russians don't want to remember their past. I think its important, if only as a lesson to the West about how dark things can get if we start going down the road of Collectivism, if we start limiting speech, if we tear down the family and try to legitimize socially destructive policies. Ironically, no one gives a shit about history in the West anyway, so we in all honesty have already forgotten the lessons anyway and are probably doomed.
